Giving Tuesday

Yesterday was #GivingTuesday. This day was created six years ago as a way to remind people of the “giving season.” In many ways, it’s a response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday – both intense days of advertising and shopping.

#GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy.

While #GivingTuesday reminds us of the importance of sharing in our resources, it is also a call to action. This day was designed as a way to encourage you to give financially and make a difference. And as the research shows, this difference will be made for you as well as the organizations you choose to support.

Some of you may have participated in #GivingTuesday, while others are only hearing of it for the first time. Either way, don’t let this time of year pass without thinking through your giving priorities. What is your mission and vision for giving financially? What areas are your priorities? What are you grateful for and how can you pass your gratitude on to others?

Of course, I encourage you to add or keep HDCH on your priority list for giving. You can donate here and support the exceptional Christian education that takes place at HDCH – if you’re reading this article, you know about the amazing learning that happens both inside and outside the classroom here at HDCH.

But more importantly, I want to remind you that the act of giving – be that time, talent or finances – induces gratitude. As Henri Nouwen once said, “Gratitude flows from the recognition that who we are and what we have are gifts to be received and shared. Gratitude releases us from bonds of obligation and prepares us to offer ourselves freely and fully for the work of the kingdom.”

So, I encourage you to take time and prayerfully consider what you are grateful for and let that be your guide as you plan out your giving for the short term and the long term.

With gratitude,

Gillian Doucet Campbell
Director of Admissions and Advancement
